Broker's Comments
This is a Traditional Hand built Phoenician boat crafted from Iroko hardwood. This boat was commercially registered and is perfect day trips for tourists. She will come with the hull totally refinished and varnished ready to go in the water. There are sets of oars supplied and bench seating fitted to accommodate the rowers!
There will be work necessary to refit her ready for sea but once done she will look very impressive sitting in any harbour as a modern replica of an ancient vessel.
The best seafarers and ship builders of the ancient world were the Phoenicians and this boat is a hand built replica of the ancient oared vessels they used mostly for hauling timber. Drawings of similar boats can be found on the tomb of Sargon at Nineveh which would date it about 700BC. They are depicted as symmetrical oared boats with high rising stem and stern posts decorated with figureheads in the shape of horse heads. The Greeks had two names for Phoenician ships: hippoi and galloi. Galloi means tubs and hippoi means horses, which is a reasonable summary of this boats main features. A great boat for offering tourist trips with a difference.
